You can take a train _almost_ to St. Tropez, but you have to catch the bus the rest of the way, which means you'll face the traffic. I've sat in a bus in St. Tropez rush hour traffic (which is pretty much anytime other than early morning) far longer than I cared to. If there's a boat, that'd be great, but I don't know anything about that. Barring a boat, just make sure that you get there as early as you can, and give yourself extra time on the way out. At 5 PM I suspect you'll be facing some real traffic, though it might not be as bad going into St. Tropez as coming out. I've never gone in during the afternoon. I agree with Kafka.
